Yaz and Strokes In the News

If you or a loved one have suffered from a Yaz injury such as blood clots, stroke, or heart attack, then read on to find out important information about filing a Yaz lawsuit with the help of a personal injury lawyer and the settlements that are being made.

Yaz is an oral contraceptive that contains the progestin drospirenone (DSRP) combined with the hormone estrogen to prevent a pregnancy. Combining progestins and estrogens in birth control pills is nothing new; the concern is over the type of progestin used (drospirenone). The problem seems to be linked to the drug drospirenone being associated with higher risks of venous thromboembolic events (VTE) such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE) or blood clots in the lung, myocardial infarction (MR) or heart attack, and ischemic stroke (CVA). Other brands of oral contraceptives that contain the progestin drospirenone include:

  • Beyaz
  • Gianvi
  • Loryna
  • Ocella
  • Safyral
  • Syeda
  • Yasmin
  • Zarah

Risks of Stroke While on Yaz

It’s common knowledge that in some cases birth control pills have been associated with a higher risk of stroke, but a report released in the August 2008 British Medical Journal and the ensuing studies conducted by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has demonstrated that there is a correlation between the use of Yaz and the increased risk of stroke. Women with a higher risk of stroke include:

  • Women who smoke
  • Women who are over the age of 35
  • Women who have high blood pressure
  • Women who have high cholesterol
  • Women who have diabetes

Yaz Lawsuit and Bayer Pharmaceuticals

For women taking oral contraceptives that contain the drug drospirenone, the risk of a Yaz injury in the form of a stroke is alarming. There have been dozens of studies to prove the increased risk of stroke and other injuries related to these types of birth control pills. Bayer Pharmaceuticals has worked hard to refute the studies and has produced documents that minimize the effects of increased risk of VTE. So far there have been approximately 3,500 court cases, with several thousand more pending against this pharmaceutical giant. If you have suffered from a VTE incident such as a blood clot, pulmonary embolism, heart attack, or stroke, here’s what you need to do:
