Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
Pulmonary Embolism In the News
There is much buzz in the news about Yaz birth control pills because of the continued reports of the development of Yaz side effects that include the increased risk of Yaz pulmonary embolisms (blood clot in the lungs) and other serious side effects. Although all contraceptives that combine hormones can increase a woman’s risk of developing a pulmonary embolism, her risk increases if she uses Yaz, Yasmin, or other popular contraceptives and:
- She is over the age of 35
- She smokes
- She has a personal or family history of blood clots and/or pulmonary embolism.
Yaz Side Effects Related to Pulmonary Embolism
The cause of the increased risk of developing a Yaz pulmonary embolism stems from an ingredient in the pills called drospirenone. Drospirenone is a synthetic progestin, that when combined with the hormone estrogen is designed to prevent pregnancy. Combining these hormone is not a new procedure, the culprit is simply the progestin of choice: drospirenone. Thousands of cases have been reported of women developing blood clots or venous thrombosis events (VTE) that can lead to other very serious Yaz side effects. Here are other common risks associated with drospirenone:
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
- Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
- Heart Attack
In other reports, patients have complained of increased risks of developing gallbladder problems, liver problems, and high blood pressure as well.
The FDA and the Yaz Pulmonary Embolism Controversy
With thousands of complaints and reports of the growing concerns of Yaz side effects, coupled with conflicting studies, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted their own studies and have issued several reports warnings. The FDA has also issued four letters of warning to Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corporation – the manufacturer of Yaz – to update the warnings on their packaging of the increased risks of developing blood clots and Yaz pulmonary embolism.
While on one hand, Bayer Pharmaceuticals continues to refute many of the claims of the women who have suffered serious Yaz side effects, yet on the other hand, they have settled over a billion dollars of cases. There are several other brand-name oral contraceptives that contain drospirenone that have been associated with VTE’s. These brands include:
