Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) & Other Side Effects
Deep Vein Thrombosis and Other Side Effects
Because of some really effective marketing tactics, Yasmin, Ocella, Gianvi, and Yaz quickly became some of the best-selling and most popular oral contraceptives available. But popularity diminshed as hundreds – and then thousands – of women came forward with reports of serious side effects of Yaz, that included blood clots and deep vein thrombosis or DVT. These birth control pills were not only used to prevent pregnancy, but many women were taking them to improve other menstrual issues, and in some cases, even treat acne.
The side effects of Yasmin, Yaz, and the others are based on the use of the synthetic progestin – drospirenone. This synthetic hormone combined with the hormone estrogen works to prevent pregnancy, but is also used in the treatment of other menstrual disorders. Many common side effects have arisen from the use of Yaz that range in severity from headaches and high blood pressure to deep vein thrombosis and even death. Here is a list of the broad range of side effects of Yaz:
- Upper Respiratory Infections
- Increased Levels of Potassium
- Weight Gain
- Hair Loss
- High Blood Sugar
- Blood Clots
- Deep Vein Thrombosis
- High Blood Pressure
- Pulmonary Embolism
- Heart Attack
Yaz Blood Clots and Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Of course the most serious side effect of Yaz is the formation of venous thromboembolic effects or VTE’s. VTE’s are simply the formation of blood clots, which are the culprits that lead to the more serious side effects of Yaz as listed above. When a patient experiences a deep vein thrombosis, that means that a blood clot has lodged somewhere deep in the body’s veins – most likely in the legs or the lungs.
Although approximately 50% of women who have a DVT don’t experience any of the associated symptoms, when there are symptoms present, they may include the following:
- Pain or painful cramping deep in the calf
- Warmth and/or redness in the affected area
- Inflammation and/or swelling in the infected leg, foot, or ankle
If you use Yaz, Yasmin, Gianvi, or Orcella, and you experience any of the above mentioned symptoms, you should seek medical attention immediately to prevent very serious complications, including death. When these DVT’s break loose and travel through the bloodstream – traveling to the lung, heart, or brain – they become potentially fatal.
DVT Treatment and Legal Recourse
Immediate treatment of a DVT is crucial to prevent Yaz blood clots from becoming life-threatening. Treatments for DVT and other related events may include the following treatment by a healthcare professional:
- Clot-busting medications
- Anticoagulants (blood thinners)
- Compression stockings to stimulate healthy blood flow and prevent swelling
- Filter implant in the large abdominal vein to prevent a blood clot from traveling to the heart, brain, or lungs
