Dangers Associated with Yaz
Because of the dangers of Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella, Gianvi or Sayfral, and other oral contraceptives containing the drug drospirenone, there have been thousands of lawsuits against Bayer Pharmaceutical company. As of May 2013, it has been reported Bayer has settled over a billion dollars worth of Yaz settlements to thousands of victims that have suffered adverse side effects from taking this product.
Television commercials and Internet media reports abound of this ongoing litigation between Bayer Pharmaceuticals and over 12,000 plaintiffs, with several thousand Yaz settlements having settled to date. Yaz is the name for a birth control pill that contains the progestin drospirenone, a synthetic hormone which when combined with estrogen will prevent pregnancy. But within a very short period the dangers of Yasmin, Ocella, Gianvi or Sayfral began to become apparent. Drospirenone increases the risk of blood clots to formulate. This can result in a variety of serious conditions known as VTE’s or venous thromboembolic events. According to the FDA, over 50 deaths have been reported of those that have used Yaz as a contraceptive as well. Other serious side effects of drospirenone:
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (Blood Clot)
- Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
- Pulmonary Embolism (Blood Clot in the Lungs)
- Ischemic Stroke
- Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack).
Contraceptives That Contain Drospirenone
There are many other birth control pills that contain drospirenone, and are known to increase the risk of blood clots as well. Understand that these oral contraceptives are not just prescribed to prevent pregnancy. These drugs are dispensed to treat women with everything from premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) to acne. FDA Warnings About Yaz
Since 2001, the FDA has received thousands of reports of injury and death and has issued several warnings about the risks associated with taking oral contraceptives that contain drospirenone. Yaz has been linked with dozens of deaths, that have included not only women of child bearing age, but women in post-childbearing age years, and unfortunately, even some as young as 17.
The FDA has also issued four warnings to date to the manufacturer, Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corporation. In a study released on October 27, 2011, on over 800,000 women, the FDA officially issued warnings about these oral contraceptives manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corporation as well as the four warning letters issued to Bayer. In those letters the FDA warned them to:
- Modify their marketing approach to address the dangers of Yaz
- Improve their warning labels about the associated risks
- Increase information availability about the risks associated with drospirenone to medical professionals
To date, Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corporation is still refuting some of the claims that plaintiffs have made in lawsuits pending against them.
