Yaz Class Action Lawsuits

Thousands of women have been using the Yaz birth control pill since its introduction back in 2001. There was a lot of hype about the benefits of Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella, and other “better” oral contraceptives, but very little was published about the soon-apparent Yaz problems that would eventually lead to a Yaz class action lawsuit. This lawsuit has allowed many victims to obtain compensation, helping them to recover from injuries caused by a dangerous drug.

Dozens of television commercials, websites, and radio ads give detailed information about the multitude of Yaz problems related the drug drospirenone, which these birth control pills contain. Concerns began to arise in the US based on a report released by the British Medical Journal in August 2009. At that time, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) funded a scientific study of its own whose data did indeed confirm that oral contraceptives containing the drug drospirenone, (DRSP) posed significantly higher risks to developing dangerous side effects. Here are some the most common Yaz problems and side effects:

  • Vision loss
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Weight gain
  • Seizures
  • Liver Complications

Class Action Lawsuit over Yaz Problems and Side Effects

Most oral contraceptives contain two female hormones, estrogen and progestin, which are combined for the primary purpose of preventing pregnancy. Drospirenone is the progestin in Yaz manufactured and marketed by Bayer Pharmaceuticals Company. Many birth control pills already have some risks associated with them, including hypertension and formation of blood clots. What makes this birth control pill so dangerous is the fact that drospirenone carries an even higher risk of developing blood clots that have led to the development of a Yaz class action lawsuit for every associated risk.

These high risks include:

  • Blood clots deep in the vein (DVT – Deep Vein Thrombosis)
  • Blood clots in the lung (PE – Pulmonary Embolism)
  • Heart Attack
  • Stroke
  • Death

Drospirenone and the Class Action Lawsuit

The FDA has determined that women using birth control pills containing the progestin drospirenone are at higher risk for developing blood clots and other serious side effects. Not only are these contraceptives used to prevent pregnancy, they are also approved to treat women with symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), to help to elevate folate levels in women who choose to use oral contraceptives, and also to treat acne. Other drug brands that contain the drug drospirenone are:

  • Loryna
  • Ocella
  • Safyral
  • Syeda
  • Beyaz
  • Yasmin
  • Gianvi
