- On April 17, 2013, a report was published concerning Bayer Pharmaceutical Company’s Yaz settlement amounts topping $1 billion.
- According to the report, Bayer has now settled nearly 5,000 cases, with 13,000 additional claimants with lawsuits pending.
- According to the plaintiffs, Yaz and Yasmin have caused multiple problems associated with the elevated risk of developing blood clots.
Bayer also said that they will evaluate each case on an individual basis for those plaintiffs bringing allegations of pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis.
Diagnosing Yaz Side Effects
Yaz is the name for an oral contraceptive that contains the progestin drospirenone, a synthetic hormone that is combined with estrogen for the purpose of preventing pregnancy. These medications were also given to patients to treat everything from mild acne to premenstrual disorders. Drospirenone is associated with an increased risk in blood clots, which formulate and lead to a host of venous thromboembolic events (VTE’s). According to the FDA, there have also been over 50 deaths related to the use of Yaz as a contraceptive. Other Yaz side effects are broken up into two categories, minor and severe.
Minor Yaz side effects include:
- Breast tenderness and/or pain
- Migraines, sometimes especially severe
- Nausea and vomiting
- Irregular menstrual cycle
- Decreased libido
- Frequent and unpredictable changes in mood
- Weight gain
Serious Yaz side effects include:
- Pulmonary embolism
- Gallbladder disease
- Liver damage
- High blood pressure
- Heart attack
Yaz Side Effect Warnings by the FDA
Since Yaz’s introduction into the oral contraceptive marketplace in 2001, the FDA has received thousands of reports of serious side effects and death, and has issued several warnings about the risks associated with taking oral contraceptives that contain drospirenone.
To date, Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corporation is still refuting some of the claims that plaintiffs have brought.
